Integrated Baby Therapy

Supporting babies, parents, early relationships

The earliest experiences of life can have a profound influence on a child’s development and on the relationship between parent and baby. When pregnancy, birth or the early months have presented challenges, it is not uncommon for families to feel unsettled or overwhelmed. Integrated Baby Therapy offers a gentle, relationship-based approach that supports babies and their caregivers in finding greater understanding, connection and ease.

What is Integrated Baby Therapy (IBT)

IBT recognises that babies communicate through their bodies, behaviour and relationships long before they have words. Rather than focusing on the baby in isolation, therapy creates a calm and supportive space where parents and babies can be together, making sense of early experiences and discovering new ways of relating. By paying careful attention to the baby’s unique ways of communicating and to the parent–baby relationship, the work aims to strengthen connection, support healthy development and foster emotional wellbeing for both baby and family.

How IBT Can Help

IBT may be helpful when pregnancy, birth or the early months of life have been particularly challenging. Families sometimes seek support following a difficult or traumatic birth, a premature birth or neonatal care, feeding or sleep difficulties, excessive crying or unsettled behaviour, or when parents feel anxious, overwhelmed or find it difficult to connect with their baby. It can also provide space to strengthen the parent–baby relationship when there is no single event to explain why things feel difficult. The aim is to support both baby and caregivers in developing greater understanding, connection and confidence together.

What to Expect in a Session

An Integrated Baby Therapy session involves meeting with the parents and their baby. This may be with the mother and baby, or, where possible, with both parents and the baby.

The first session provides an opportunity to explore any concerns that have brought you to therapy, alongside a gentle review of the pregnancy, birth and early experiences, as well as any family history or circumstances that may be relevant. Some parents prefer to meet with me on their own initially, which can provide space to ask questions, discuss expectations, and gain a sense of how I work before bringing their baby.

Sessions move gently between attending to your baby’s experience and supporting you as parents. We pay close attention to your baby’s cues, body language and patterns of regulation, while also noticing the emotional and relational experiences within the family. This creates opportunities to support regulation, acknowledge and honour your baby’s early story, and strengthen connection and understanding within the family.

Practicalities

IBT sessions are usually 90 minutes long and cost £90 per session.

Sessions take place periodically, guided by the needs of your baby and family. For many families this is every four to six weeks, although sessions can be arranged more or less frequently as needed.

Sessions take place in person at my private practice in Dartington, Devon.

My practice is supervised by an experienced Integrated Baby Therapy supervisor.
